"Homegoing AD" by Kima Jones

Before reading the poem “Homegoing” by Kima Jones, I researched information on the author and her personal life. I discovered she is an American writer who was born in Harlem, New York. Kima Jones wrote this poem to tell her story about an adventurous time in her life that she experienced.

In this narrative poem, the author goes into a lot of detail describing her long car ride she had through North Carolina to one of her grandparents' funerals. She then moves to another story when she and her cousins snuck into the woods to drink and smoke, and then ran from an alligator. The beginning of the story was drawn out and pretty depressing as she spoke about the funeral. However, towards the end of the text it got interesting and exciting as they were running from the alligator. The vibe of this text really switched up as she described her different memories. I would consider myslef as a part of the intended audience because she strives to share a personal moment in her life to whoever is interested in reading. This story shows a perspective from "down south" and how her life is. She could be trying to prove her differences and how she may be set apart from others. This text could be intended to entertain and inform the audience on how her personal life was as a child.

"What Happens When Deaf People go to the Movies?"

This mentor text is a vlog based video by a famous YouTube and actor Chella Man. Chella man known is for sharing his experiences as a transgender, deaf, genderqueer, and Jewish person of color.

This YouTube video is begins with two deaf people who go to a movie theater. As they told the workers they needed a Captiview, the workers seemed confused and had to put new batteries in the device. When they got into the movies, the Captiview kept falling over and was using the text from a different movie. The two YouTubers had a very bad experience and ended up leaving the movie early. Their overall experience was not good and they said they would never go to the movies again.

This text is meant to spread awanress to the deaf community and educate others about the common issues deaf people struggle with everyday. The intended audience could be for people who aren't deaf and aren't aware of the issues deaf people experience at a movie theater. Another audience for this text could be directed toward movie theaters and workers to share their terrible experience in hopes that they resolve these issues.

"An Oral History of the Early Trans Internet" by Henry Giardina

This mentor text is an article by Henry Giardina who is a trans/nonbinary writer living in Los Angeles. The website started off by explaining the struggle trans people faced before the Internet was a thing. This text then provided direct quotes from other people in the trans community who were struggling to find themselves due to no Internet access. Before the Internet, one way trans groups would make themselves known is by using the card catalog systems at the public libraries. They had a whole campaign where they would create fake decimal card systems that members would sneak into the actual catalog. However, this was just one way trans people had to navigate this experience. A man named Mac said "I remember using Craigslist for dating." This article provides a long list of people and their personal experience or struggles they face as a part of the trans community. The trans community is now able to us the Internet to communicate with others and share their stories while transitioning.

This text could be meant for people who may not be aware of the struggle these people went through. It could be meant for teens today who have had access to the internet all their lives and may not understand the struggle others had and how they had to naviagte there lives differenlty. This text could be meant to spread awareness towards the trans community and educate our society today. It could have been made for educational purposes and how our society has grown.

Mentor Text #4

"Above and Beyonce"

Before I began reading this mentor text, I decided to do some research on the website Vanity Fair. I discovered it was a monthly magazine for popular culture, fashion, and current affairs. The target audience for this mageinze is females with the average age of around 45. I then decided to do some more research on Lisa Robinson (the writer of "Above and Beyonce."). She is an American journalist and writer from Manhattan, New York.

The text started off with Lisa describing the setting she was in as she was sitting on the couch about to interview Beyonce. She went into detail on how it was a sunny May afternoon and they were in an apartment complex waiting for their pizza to get delivered. The article then transitioned into a describing who Beyonce is and how her fame began. She explains her childhood and then goes into detail on her relationship with Jay Z. To show the context of this interivew, Lisa puts her words in italics and then has Beyonce's response in normal text.

This text is a very informative article and could be for a variety of audiences who may not know much about Beyonce. However, I do somewhat agree with the research I found that the target audience is focused on women. This article uses a lot of direct quotes from the interview making it feel very real and as if you could imagine being in this interview. Lisa went into detail on asking Beyonce about the truth of specific rumors and also asked questions focusing on Beyonce's person feelings and perspectives.
