Part One

Growing Up Surfing

I learned how to surf when I was about five years old and have been doing it ever since. My dad has surfed all his life and always encouraged me to do the same. When I was younger, I never really enjoyed being in the ocean, but my dads passion towards surfing is what kept me going. Looking back at my childhood, I am forever thankful for this encouragement to surf because it now has a huge impact on my life today. Being in the ocean is a place where I feel most relaxed and can forget about all the stress in my life. I can forget about everything going on and truly be in the moment.  A couple years ago I went through several big hardships in my life and always turned to surfing in order to get my mind of things. I never liked to share my emotions or struggles with others, so being in the ocean was always a temporary cure to most of my problems. Finding a place where I can take a break from reality has impacted my life today and has changed my perspectives on life.

Recipe to Home

Peanut butter cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 cup crunchy peanut butter

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

  • 2 large eggs eggs

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

This recipe my mom makes describes my comfort food. The smell of these cookies in the oven reminds me of the excitement my siblings and I would have as they were almost ready. Growing up eating these cookies all the time makes me miss being a child and living at home where I could have these whenever I wanted.

Scar Story

A couple years ago, I was camping in the middle of the desert to go offroading with a big group of families. My dad, who loves to ride dirt bikes, has always brought our family here for as long as I can remember. I was not very good at motorcycling, but I always have fun doing it. One morning we woke up early to go on a dirt bike ride, and I was not thrilled. Of course, I started off in the back going slow and falling behind. Eventually, I got super far behind to the point where I couldn't see them anymore and I needed to catch up. As I was speeding up, there was a big bump in the dirt and I flew over it and fell off. The motorcycle landed right on my leg with the engine sizzling on my skin. I panicked, but was able to push the motorcycle off quickly. Since we were in the middle of nowhere, I didn't go to the doctor but ended up icing my leg the rest of the trip. This burn mark has left a scar on my leg that I still have today. A scar that has left me with a core memory I will never forget.

Shake Shack

(Made in my computer graphics class)

When I was in elementary school, the Shake Shack was the location my five closest friends and I would always go to. Our moms would drop us off there every Friday so we could order our favorite shakes and begin the weekend off right. We would make sure to pick a table overlooking the ocean even if that meant we had to wait for people to finish eating. Tommy, our favorite worker, would always bring us our shakes, never forgetting to say “happy Friday my friends.” The Shake Shack was a place where we would laugh for five minutes straight, talk about boys, share ours secrets, and have conversations I still remember to this day. At the time, I never thought the Shake Shack was a place that would bring me to some of my longest and closest friendships, but this little restaurants holds so many core memories I will never forget.

Part Two

Letter to Family

Dear mom and dad,

Right now I am sitting in my dorm room waiting for my roommate to get back so we can go eat food on campus. I have a lot of homework right now and I have two more classes to go to today. My Interior Design classes have been very difficult which has caused me to second guess my major. I have gotten much better at maintaining a balance between school work and enjoying my free time which has really helped my grades in school. Aside from the actual school aspect, I have been doing great! My sorority has a formal on Saturday and I am really excited to be there with all of my friends. The weather has been so nice lately and we have been spending a lot of time outside and watching sunsets. I definitely miss the beach though… there's nothing better than sitting at the beach, eating Chipotle, and watching the sunset. Anyways, I miss you guys very much and can’t wait to see you!

Love,

Makenna

Community

Asking myself what community I am a part of was quite a challenge. At home in California, I was in several different communities including sports, community services, and working. Although I still feel somewhat a part of these communities, I am not very active in them anymore considering I am in a whole different state now. I realized the only prominent community I am a part of was being a freshman at TCU. This grew my interest in looking into getting a new job next semester to broaden my horizon of communities in my new home. Becoming apart of several communities is definitely a goal of mine, but being a TCU freshman is such a fun and amazing community I am grateful to be apart of.

Interview

I interviewed a TCU student from California named Maddie Clark. We began discussing the transition from living in California to Texas. She told me she had a pretty smooth transition, but has definitely learned a lot since the beginning of the year. Maddie stated “living in a dorm with another roommate is definitely a challenge, but can also be really fun.” She went into further detail explaining how she and her roommate get along and explained the patience she has gained. Maddie is learning to put her education before her social life because she was not happy with her first semester grades. Social life is a big part of TCU and can sometimes be overwhelming coming in as a first year student.

I then asked Maddie questions regarding expenses and dorm living. Maddie told me she does not have a car here and struggles with getting around off campus. She either has to find a ride from someone or Uber to her location. She also included that ubers are expensive and she has unfortunately spent most of her budget on Ubers recently. Maddie wishes there were better ways to get around off campus to go to places such as the grocery store or out to eat.

Pre Writing Artifact Part one
I have a scar right here on my leg. I was riding a motorcycle a couple years ago in shorts which was not a good idea considering how bad I was. I wasn't paying attention and hit a bump and I fell off. The engine part of the motorcycle landed on my leg and burnt me. It was only on me for a couple seconds until I was able to get the motorcycle off my leg but it still left a small scar.

One day I was motorcycling at a place in the middle of nowhere called Glamis. It is an offroading desert with sand dunes in California which is where I am from.  I was not very good at motorcycling but I still decided to go over a jump that wasn't even very big. So I went pretty fast over this jump and somehow fell off. The motorcycle landed on my right leg and I couldn't get it off so it burnt me. After screaming in pain for a couple seconds, I was able to get the motorcycle off me but it still left a scar. Even though it was very traumatic I still love going to Glamis.

“I don't have a car here so I have to either try to find a ride or uber.”

Living with a roommate is fun but takes a lot of patients and communication

Revision Artifact part two
Right now I am living with my best friend who I only met 6 months ago. Living with her is such a blast and I currently just signed up to live with each other next year in our sorority house. I am in the sorority Delta Gamma and am so grateful to be a part of this community and have met so many amazing girls. I have met so many of my closest friends through this sorority and I think living in the house with all them would just be so much fun. Last weekend we had a fundraiser for our sorority called puppies and pizza where we had several dogs up for adoption on campus along with pizza. This was outside in a location where people could stop by, pet the dogs, and grab a pizza on their way to class. This fundraiser went really well and we believe we raised a lot of money.

Pre wiritng artifact part three

  • Expenses of transportation for a college student

  • Ubers - expenses

  • College students - broke

  • Uber student discount

  • Schools link up with uber

  • Bring more business to uber

  • Cheaper rides for college students

  • Also would decrease drinking and driving

Peer Response Artifact part three
I asked my friends if my campaign would be something they would be interested in. They noted that having a student discount for uber would also bring more business to Ubers company because more people would drift away from other apps such as Lytf and use Ubers college discount. They agreed I should use instagram to promote this idea.

  • The audience I am focusing on is college students. Although ubers can be expensive in all places, I believe most college students are on a budget and do not have the money to be paying $15 every time they need to go to the grocery store. I am using social media - specifically Instagram to reach my audience. I feel instagram would be the most effective way to show my campaign because it is a very commonly used app for college students.

Mentor Response Artifact part three
I was talking to my RA on campus and asked for her opinion on my campaign idea. She told me that would be a grate thing for college students especially freshman. She gave me tips on how to share my campaign with the public and suggested I put posters up in the dorms. She said as an RA she has found this an effective way to share information with college students.
